Compact under-sink dishwashers

dishwasher under the sinkLimited space in the kitchen and the growing number of household appliances placed in it force people to come up with new ways to integrate appliances. One such method is to install a dishwasher under the sink. Why not? After all, there is often nothing in the washing machine wash other than a trash can, which means that the space is not used rationally. Let's figure out which dishwasher can fit into this small corner.

Dimensions of compact dishwashers

Compact dishwashers can be different: built-in and free-standing. At the same time, their dimensions also differ significantly from each other. Freestanding dishwashers can have the following sizes:

  • height - 44 cm, width -50 cm, depth -55 cm (for example, Candy CDCF 6);
  • height - 45 cm, width -55 cm, depth -50 cm (for example, Bosch SKS 51E88);
  • height – 60 cm, width – 55 cm, depth -50 cm (for example, Ginzzu DC281).

As you can see, the width of compact freestanding dishwasher models varies from 50 to 55 cm.

The dimensions of built-in models are slightly different from free-standing ones:

height - 44 cm, width -55 cm, depth -50 cm (Flavia CI 55 HAVANA);

height - 45 cm, width -60 cm, depth -55 cm (Siemens SK 76M544).

The conclusion is that the smallest compact dishwasher model, 50 cm wide, exists only among freestanding ones.

Which dishwasher is best to be built under the sink?

dishwasher under the sinkWhich model can be installed under the sink? Here the size of the sink will be of paramount importance.In small kitchens, the width of the sink does not exceed 55 cm, in order to save space, and therefore you need to choose a model slightly less than 55 cm so that it can easily fit between the walls of the cabinet. As for the height, in this case even a taller model of 60 cm will fit perfectly if it is floor-mounted and provided the siphon is redesigned.

You can choose both partially built-in and free-standing models. Fully built-in under-sink dishwashers are not as convenient because they require a separate facade, and then the sink doors will have to be removed. If you plan to make a kitchen set at the same time as purchasing a dishwasher, then no problems should arise.

Some people believe that installing a dishwasher under the sink is generally prohibited, but why? The fact is that water communications pass under the sink, and there is a risk of moisture and water getting onto the dishwasher body and inside. But when there is no way out, you have to take such a risk, you just need to organize everything correctly.

Installing a dishwasher under the sink

flat siphonTo install a dishwasher in a sink, you must first connect all communications. First we solve the problem of connecting the drain - we need to redo the siphon. There are special flat siphons on sale for installing a sink above a dishwasher or washing machine, for example, as in the photo. Installing such a siphon is no different from a regular one. Don't forget to turn off the water before starting work.

Important! Place the drain hole in the sink, if possible, in a corner, so that in case of a leak, water does not flow into the dishwasher, but to the side.

After replacing the siphon, connect the drain hose of the dishwasher to it, and if necessary, the washing machine, but for this there must be two branches in the siphon.Now we connect a tee with a tap to the hose going to the mixer. A flow filter is directly connected to the tap, but you can do without it. The dishwasher inlet hose is screwed to the filter.

installing a dishwasher under the sinkAfter the communications are connected, carefully insert the dishwasher into the sink. Please note that the bottom shelf on which the machine will stand must be firmly fixed and be designed to support the weight of the machine with dishes. If this is a freestanding model, then this will complete the installation process. The partially built-in model can be secured to the side walls of the cabinet using metal strips.

In addition to sewerage and water supply, you will need a 220 V outlet for connection; if there is not one nearby, then you should not plug the machine into the network via an extension cord. It’s better to invite a specialist who will install such an outlet for your dishwasher.

Thus, compact under-sink dishwashers are basically small table-top machines that were cleverly designed to be hidden in the sink. Installing such a machine is fraught with some difficulties, but with the right approach, all of them are quite solvable.
